Choosing the right method for you; Cleaning, Sanitising or Disinfecting

When it comes to keeping the workplace clean, it is important to know which products you should be using.

Cleaning: The process of removing germs, dirt or impurities from surfaces or objects. Cleaning works by using a soap and water to physically remove germs from surfaces. Whilst this process doesn’t kill germs but removes them, it does lower the numbers and reduce the risk of germs spreading.

Sanitising: The process of lowering the numbers of germs/bacteria on surfaces or objects to a safe level (as judged by public health standards). Sanitising is meant to reduce, not kill, the occurrence and growth of germs and bacteria on a surface, similarly to cleaning.

Disinfectant: The process of killing germs/bacteria on surfaces or objects. Disinfecting works by using chemicals to kill germs/bacteria/moulds etc on surfaces.

Keeping your workplace safe:

It is important to match your cleaning and disinfecting activities to the types of germs you want to remove or kill. Most studies have shown that a virus can live and potentially infect a person for up to 48 hours after being deposited on a surface. Deep cleaning and fogging processes are recommended if there is potential risk to your workplace of being exposed to infection. However, whilst anti-viral solutions are available for targeting specific strains on virus, anti-bacterial disinfectants protect surfaces and reduce the environment in which bacterias, viruses, moulds etc can grow. In order to create a safe and hygienic work place recommendation is to ensure frequent touch point cleaning is conducted with a disinfectant to kill and protect surfaces.

If a surface is not visibly dirty, you can clean it with a product that both cleans (removes germs) and disinfects (kills germs). Be sure to read the label directions carefully, as not all products can achieve this.

Pay close attention to hazard warnings and directions on product labels. Cleaning products and disinfectants often call for the use of gloves or eye protection due to containing bleach, alcohol or toxic ingredients.
